As we wrap up Term 2, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a successful and rewarding term at Wynyard High School. Our focus this term has been on growth—one of our core values—and it has been inspiring to see students across all year levels embracing the idea that learning means improving, even when things get tough.
A standout highlight this term was the Year 9 engagement with local industry, made possible through the continued support of The Smith Family. These experiences are invaluable in helping our students connect their learning to real-world opportunities and future pathways.
Our Year 8 students have also continued to build on their strong start to the year. It was fantastic to see so many of them take part in the recent excursion to the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre, followed by a celebration at Airtime360. These experiences not only enrich learning but also strengthen the bonds between students and staff.
Looking ahead, Term 3 will be a crucial time for all students to consolidate the progress made so far. I encourage all families to take time over the break to reflect on the mid-year feedback provided by teachers and to set clear goals for continued growth in the second half of the year.
We ended the term on a high note with our assembly, where we celebrated the outstanding work habits of many students through Certificates of Excellence. We also acknowledged the impressive efforts of 12 students who significantly improved their school attendance—a wonderful example of personal growth and commitment.
As we head into the mid-year break, I want to thank our students, staff, and families for their ongoing support and dedication. I wish everyone a safe, restful holiday and look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday, 21 July.
On Thursday, 12 June, the SEC held our Big Freeze Ice Plunge, incorporating our Winter Warmers Day. We raised nearly $3000 which we donated to MND research. Students were encouraged to come dressed in their warmest, comfy clothes, we sold hot chocolates and hot donuts, but the highlight of the day was no doubt the Ice Plunge. Students from each year group joined the SEC, 10 members of staff and two special guests to be plunged into a container of iced water!
We would like to acknowledge the work of Mr Baker and Liam, who designed and made the wonderful plunge pool with the assistance of a number of students. Thanks to those of you who took part and also everyone who generously made a donation.
Giving students a voice is one of the major roles the SEC plays in our school. For the first half of the year, we have been supported by representatives from each class. We thank the following students for their contribution to the SEC 2025.

7B - Seamus

In Week 8, our Year 8 students enjoyed a full-day excursion that offered both educational and recreational experiences. The day began with an early departure from Wynyard High School as we made our way to the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre. Students explored the museum in small groups, engaging with the interactive displays and learning more about the site’s rich history, including the 2006 mine disaster, which they had studied in class prior to the visit.
After the tour, students enjoyed lunch and some time to play at Riverbend Park before heading to LexFun to take part in Airtime360. This high-energy activity was a great way for students to finish the day, offering fun, fitness, and plenty of laughter. It was a rewarding day, and students should be proud of the way they conducted themselves.

Congratulations to our Year 9/10 Netball Team on their grand final win against Marist Regional College! It was an outstanding performance from the entire team and a well-deserved victory.
After finishing as runners-up in recent grand finals, this time it was our turn to take home the win—what a fantastic way to finish the season!
A huge thank you to Kayte for her dedication, encouragement, and expert coaching throughout the season. We also extend our thanks to the parents and guardians who supported the team with transport, scoring and cheering them on each week.

In Year 8 English, we are exploring a unit called Barbie: Breaking the Mould. As part of this unit, we have been learning about mise-en-scène—a film term that refers to everything you see within a shot, including setting, lighting, costume, and actor placement. Before viewing the Barbie film, we have been developing our understanding of different camera and film techniques. This includes experimenting with various video and photo styles often used in filmmaking to create meaning and emotion. Some of the techniques we have explored include the panning shot, tracking shot, dolly shot, point-of-view shot, and zoom shot. We have also looked at different types of shot ranges, such as extreme long shot, long shot, full shot, medium shot, close-up, and extreme close-up. Once we watch the film, we will apply this knowledge to identify and analyse how these techniques are used to tell the story.

Hellyer College Information Evening
Hellyer College recently held a Taster Day for Year 10 students, the next transition event is the Parent Information Night. The evening will begin at the Hellyer College Cafeteria on Wed 6th August at 5:30pm with a 20 min general info session on college life, ATARS, TCE, TASC and VET pathways and then guests can move around the college talking to staff in subject areas. The session ends at 7pm. Students are strongly encouraged to attend as well.

Acknowledgements & Thanks
Claire M – A huge thank you for keeping the Green Team alive. Claire is its only member and takes on the daily tasks of washing the breakfast cups and feeding the food scraps to the chickens. It is a thankless job that she completes each morning without batting an eyelid.
Mrs. Dixon’s Agriculture Classes – Thank you for picking up the food scraps on the days Claire can not. Your help is very much appreciated.
Breakfast & Canteen Volunteers – To my many volunteers, thank you for a great term. Some of you stepped out of your comfort zones to handle the money—something I am especially grateful for. Thank you also for stocking my fridges, unpacking the cup noodles, and serving everyone who partakes in breakfast. Your support makes the mornings run smoothly.
Mobile Phone Payments – Important Notice
Starting Term 3, students and staff will no longer be allowed to use mobile phones to make purchases at the canteen.
-
Only physical cards will be accepted via EFTPOS
-
No tap payments using phones
Please note this decision has not been made locally—it follows DECYP's policy. Make sure you are prepared with your card from the start of the new term.
Canteen Highlights
The canteen has continued to provide students and staff with healthy, nutritious food throughout the term. Some of the most popular offerings have been:
-
Sue’s homemade banana and zucchini bread, raspberry muffins, and meatball subs
-
Hot dishes served as weekly specials such as burrito wraps, chili con carne, jacket potatoes, curried chicken on rice, shepherd’s pie, and broccoli fritters
These are enjoyed in large numbers, showing just how appreciated these meals really are.
In Summary
From Term 3, mobile phones may not be used for canteen payments. Please bring a card if you plan to make purchases.
Thank you to everyone who helped throughout the term—your efforts are seen, valued, and truly make a difference.
We would like to remind our students of the importance of drinking water. Please bring a water bottle (preferably full) to school with you every day.

Let’s Talk Active Travel and the School Commute - Copy
Active travel means walking, cycling, scootering, skateboarding or any similar transport where human energy is spent to travel. The health benefits of active travel are well recognised, particularly as an alternative to motorised or sedentary forms of transport. Using public transport almost always includes walking to and from destinations, and therefore also can be considered as active travel.
Active travel can also make a significant impact on carbon emissions. Cycling, e-biking or walking can help tackle the climate crisis, even if you swap the car for active travel just one day a week - according to a first of its kind, 2021 UK study.
“We found that those who switch just one trip per day from car driving to cycling reduce their carbon footprint by about 0.5 tonnes over a year.”
Walking or biking to school is an early experience and obvious opportunity for ‘utility cycling’ which is cycling for transport and not just for fun. Utility cycling regularly through childhood typically leads to higher rates of walking and cycling for daily trips into adulthood. It is therefore valuable for encouraging a longer-term, city and potentially state or nation-wide modal shift towards more active mobility.
Since children learn by example, and parents and carers can be powerful role models, we are taking this opportunity to ask parents and carers about their school commutes and opportunities for active travel to and from school.
Safe and Active Routes to School Survey
This survey helps us to learn more about how you/your children travel to and from school, why you choose to travel this way and your day-to-day experiences regarding safety and movement. The survey is targeting the Wynyard and Somerset community of schools, but anyone in the Waratah-Wynyard LGA can provide answers.
We will use this information to help inform future decision-making around infrastructure improvements and other measures we can all use as a community to share the streets.
Your participation is voluntary. The survey should take around 5-10 minutes to complete.
