Wow! What an incredible success our Evening of the Arts turned out to be! Over the course of our four performances, we welcomed nearly 800 attendees, a remarkable show of support for our talented students. It was exciting to see our students shine on stage and behind the scenes, showcasing their creativity and hard work.
A particular highlight was the role our Year 10 students played as leaders and role models. Watching their passion and engagement was not only inspiring but also energised our younger performers. Their dedication and enthusiasm have set a fantastic example, and it is wonderful to see the positive influence they have had on the entire school community.
As we wrap up Term 3, I want to extend a thank you to everyone involved in making this event such a memorable experience. From the performers to the staff and families who supported them, your contributions helped create something special.
We have several important events planned for Term 4, and details have been shared in today’s newsletter to families. For students who will be in Year 8, 9, and 10 in 2025, we will be holding an Information Evening for 2025 course options on 22 October at 5:30pm at Wynyard High School. This event will mark the launch of our 2025 course information guide and is a great opportunity for parents/guardians to be curious, explore, and ask questions. Staff will be available to provide information on the exciting changes and opportunities for 2025.
As we look ahead, we are also reminded of our school value of responsibility. Whether in academics, performances, or community events, we encourage our students to take responsibility for their own learning and growth. It is this value that continues to drive our school community forward, preparing students to meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Enjoy a well-deserved break, and I look forward to seeing what Term 4 brings!
Options Evening
We are excited to welcome all current Year 7, 8, and 9 students and their families to our Options Evening on Tuesday, 22 October, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. This informative event will highlight the comprehensive overhaul of our options programs, offering an in-depth look at the enhanced choices available. Year 8 students will now have greater autonomy in selecting their options, while an additional options line for Year 9 and 10 students promises even more diverse learning opportunities. We encourage you to join us and discover these exciting new developments.
Athletics Carnival
Our annual Athletics Carnival will be taking place on November 21 and 22 (Week 6). We are set for two days of physical fun and teamwork, as each house battles to be the 2024 champion.
Parents and friends will be welcome to come along and spectate. Please ensure that students arrive to school prepared for two long days outside. We will have numerous shade tents and ample amounts of sunscreen set up around the site. Students will need to regularly ensure they slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on some sunnies. We also encourage students to consume plenty of water to avoid dehydration. The canteen hours will be extended, allowing students access throughout the day.
More information regarding event timetables, viewing areas and student expectations will be released in Term 4. We wish everyone a happy and active holiday.
Term 3 - Excursions and Events
Tall Timbers and Duck River Pavilion
Last week, our PoL Hospitality and Tourism, along with Hospitality and Catering students, enjoyed an unforgettable day in Smithton, organised by the Beacon Foundation. They explored the various departments of Tall Timbers Hotel and Resort, gaining valuable industry insights.
At Duck River Pavilion, students were motivated by MasterChef runner-up Josh Perry and his son Austen, an apprentice butcher. Josh treated everyone to his gourmet sausages and offered inspiring advice about future opportunities.
The day concluded with a visit to Duck River Meadows Robotic Dairy, where Saputo hosted a delightful cheese and honey tasting, showcasing local products.
Big hART and First Foods
Big Hart is working closely with our Hospitality students. Giving the students opportunities to work in a commercial kitchen with Chef Isobel Sykes and the Big hART team. Last week we started working with Isobel with her new community venture, First Foods, producing food and social support for new mothers. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to play a role in this process, not only developing important catering skills, but also develop the important soft skills including empathy, communication, social conscience and sense of community. This week students assisted in the production of the first run of granola which was gifted to guests at the Supper Series. The guests were asked to pay the gift forward to someone who is need of extra support. The menu was created from Seabrook Valley Farm produce, a local sustainable family business, Chef Isobel created a distinctive Greek theme. We all learned that onion weed/grass has a very mild onion/garlic flavour and added a wonderful subtle flavour to the flavoursome vegetarian dishes including Dolmades, whole wheat pita bread. We also met a local duck farmer, Bec and Paul, owners of a new sustainable business in northern Tasmania. The farm “Lone Goose Farm” is a sustainable Mascovy Duck producer. The next supper will be sought after with the theme of buffalo.
Battle of the Houses
We held our annual Battle of the Houses afternoon on Wednesday, 11 September. Students chose one of the ten activities on offer and went head-to-head against opposing houses. Attendance and participation were fantastic on the day with great feedback provided by our activity leaders. This day provided our students with an opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and experience a variety of learning opportunities.
Pickleball
Students had the chance to jump into an afternoon filled with various challenges. Here is a group who took part in an exciting pickleball tournament, thanks to the fantastic support from Wynyard Pickleball!
Race to Glory
Here is the group that participated in the Race to Glory activity as part of our Battle of the Houses competition! They worked together to complete a series of intense 15-minute challenges.

Movie and Pizza Night
What an incredible turnout we had for our Movie Night! Our students were having a blast, enjoying a spread of delicious pizza while they settled in for their pick of two fantastic movies. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as everyone relaxed and enjoyed the evening together.
Year 7 Science Highlights
This term, Year 7 students have been exploring fascinating topics in science, gaining deeper insight into the world around us. One of the key areas of focus has been the cyclic changes in the relative positions of the Earth, Sun, and Moon. Students have learned how these movements lead to natural phenomena such as eclipses, the changing seasons, and tides. They have discovered how the Earth's tilt and orbit around the sun cause the seasons, while the moon’s gravitational pull influences the tides.
In addition, students have delved into the world of simple machines, understanding how basic mechanisms such as levers, pulleys, and inclined planes can make tasks easier by multiplying force. They have had hands-on opportunities to experiment with these machines and observe how they work in real-world applications.
It’s been an exciting term of discovery, filled with engaging lessons and activities that have helped Year 7 build a strong foundation in science!
Congratulations to Ciara, who has been selected as a state finalist in the National History Competition! She entered her piece titled 'The Rise of Australian Women in European Football' in the ‘Australian Women’s History’ special category. In November, Ciara will travel to Hobart to attend the Premier’s Award Ceremony. Good luck, Ciara!
Have your say on the future of Tasmania’s education system
The Tasmanian Government has established an Independent Review of Tasmania’s education system to improve the education system over the next 10 years. And they want to hear from families, children and young people of all ages, and members of the community.
There are multiple ways you can get involved:
- Respond to the public Consultation Paper
- Complete the survey for educators, families and the community
- Complete the short survey for students
- Submit a creative response to the question (for children and young people only): Imagine yourself at the end of school, what have you learned, what have you achieved and who do you want to be?
Submissions responding to the Consultation Paper must be submitted by Sunday 13 October 2024, and all other consultation opportunities will close on Sunday 27 October 2024.
