Term 3 has been exceptionally busy, and it has been wonderful to celebrate the successes of so many students at our assembly this week. I would like to take this opportunity to focus on the Value of Responsibility and to acknowledge both our staff and students for their efforts.
This term, our staff have gone above and beyond to provide opportunities beyond the regular curriculum, especially in sports like football, badminton, and basketball. Their dedication and flexibility have made it possible for our students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
I also want to recognise our students who have demonstrated responsibility in various aspects of school life. Your commitment to your studies, extracurricular activities, and contributions to the school community do not go unnoticed. I particularly want to acknowledge the work of so many young people who are participating in additional activities and embracing a sense of community.
Additionally, I want to congratulate the 23 students who applied to be part of the Kinmen Island exchange in October/November. It was a challenging process to shortlist and interview students to select the 5 successful applicants. I wish these students all the best in their preparation to travel to China and Taiwan with Mr Pieremont.
I encourage everyone to embrace the challenges and opportunities ahead. Let’s continue to support one another and strive for excellence in everything we do.
On Friday, 19 July, we welcomed ten students and two adults from Kinmen Island (Taiwan). Seven local families generously offered to host our visiting students, making them feel very welcome and showing them around our beautiful area. Altogether fity-nine students from Kinmen Island were hosted by four schools along the coast for two weeks.
Our visiting students were allocated two buddies, who looked after them extremely well, supporting them both in and out of class. Although communication was a barrier, charades and Google translate assisted and allowed students to build strong relationships.
During their time at Wynyard High School, our visitors joined in a number of fantastic events including:
- The Welcome to Country at Devonport with our SEC
- Visiting Dip Falls and Stanley with 9B
- Participating in the Year 9 Wynyard High School Olympics
- English as a Second Language classes, including working with 7C
- Pizza and Games Night with their Buddies
- Visiting Wings Wildlife Park and Gunns Plains Caves
- Dancing in PE with our Year 7 students
- Playing badminton at lunch time with our students
It was wonderful to watch the Kinmen students participate in all that Wynyard High School has to offer and our students (particularly the buddies) are to be congratulated on making them feel so welcome.
We farewelled our visitors with a lovely assembly, where the Kinmen students told us all about life in Kinmen Island and performed a dance for us. Our buddies bid their new friends goodbye and safe travels. It was obvious that they had enjoyed their stay.
Thank you to those families who opened their homes to host students, our student buddies and staff who welcomed Kinmen students into their classes.
In late October, we will send five students, along with Mr Pieremont, to experience life and culture in Kinmen Island, as well as spending time in China and Taiwan.
We are excited to announce that the five students heading to Kinmen Island with Mr Pieremont are:
- Bryce R
- Jay B
- Claire D
- Willow C
- Elliot S
On Wednesday, 24 July, we hosted our annual Parent Information Evening for Year 6 students and their families, a night we always look forward to. This event is one of our favourites, as it allows us to showcase the incredible opportunities offered at Wynyard High School. The evening was filled with engaging activities—from sampling delicious treats to climbing walls and admiring work samples—creating a welcoming and interactive environment for everyone.
It also provided a valuable opportunity for our dedicated teaching team and students to begin forming connections with our incoming cohort. We were thrilled to meet our newest students and their families, and we look forward to celebrating their growth and achievements over the next four years. The positive feedback we received from the community was a testament to the pride and commitment of our staff and students, and we are excited about the journey ahead for these young people.
Year 6 students from our feeder schools have been actively participating in our Transition Program at Wynyard High School. As part of this program, we have created a Transition Plan for each student. Recently, they attended an ‘Introduction to Wynyard High School’ session, which involved students engaging in introductory lessons across core and option subjects such as Science, PE, Drama, Art, and MDT. This session provided a glimpse into what they can expect in Year 7. It also allowed them to start building connections with our teaching staff. We are excited to continue working closely with our incoming cohort, with many more visits and activities planned in the coming months!
We are rolling out the red carpet. It is that time of the year again… our Evening of the Arts is back! If you attended last year, you know it is an event not to be missed. This year, we are inspired by Taylor Swift's iconic ‘Eras’ tour, bringing you an impressive line-up of acts that celebrate different musical and artistic eras. From musical numbers to dramatic performances, and everything in between, do not miss your chance to experience our annual showcase of Art, Drama, Dance, and Music. This masterpiece will be open for public viewing on Wednesday, 25 September and Thursday, 26 September from 7:00pm-8:30am. For more information and to secure your seats, please follow the link:
Hospitality students completed the design brief to create a Highland Cow birthday cake. Students and staff voted, and the cakes were amazing. The first three cakes were:
1st - Tahlia J
2nd - Miah S (The student body voted Miah S - 1st)
3rd - Sarah W
Ten cakes were selected to go to Latrobe for the Winter Chocolate Fest Cake Competition on 11 August and Tahlia J took first place in our section. The judges also commented on the originality of Katelyn P's upside-down cow in the mud and the primary school students in attendance loved the tongue on Logan C’s Cow Cake.
Well done everyone and thank you to the students and staff that voted and we extend our thanks to Svetla and Miss Russell for their technique workshops leading to the event.
Our PoL Hospitality and Tourism class has begun an exciting new design challenge, exploring the world of Italian cuisine. We started with a hands-on pasta-making workshop at the Watershed. Many thanks to Big hART for joining us, and to Freda for leading the master class. We also appreciate Justin from The Waterfront Wynyard for joining us for an informal lunch with our students.
What is The Blue Tree Project?
Blue Tree Project has flourished into charity, helping change the way we talk about mental health after the tragic loss of Jayden Whyte to suicide in 2018.
We have a Blue Tree at Wynyard High School to symbolise there is always someone to talk to when you are struggling with mental health issues.
The Blue Tree we had before was removed when the sports ground was upgraded last year.
Our new Blue Tree is located near the walkway to the bus stop.
The Blue Tree motto is: There is hope. There is support.
This term in HPE, students have been participating in the dance unit. During this unit, students have been practicing their coordination, creativity, movement and teamwork skills. Dance allows all students to have fun, while staying active. At the completion of the unit, students get to participate in Just Dance, where students can showcase their talents.
Student Assistance Scheme (STAS)
STAS closes to new applications in the first week of September. New applications for 2024 will not be accepted after this time and further assessments will not be made for this school year.
